Public Statement
Mayor Anthony M. Masiello
January 20, 2000
“Yesterday, January 19, 2000, I was pleased to welcome First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton to the City of Buffalo. Mrs. Clinton began her public schedule by announcing the City of Buffalo’s designation as a Millennium Community, an official White House honor for the city’s plans to celebrate the centennial of the 1901 Pan American Exposition. “The Millennium Community designation recognizes Buffalo’s significant history, as well as the city’s plans for future endeavors (e.g., restoring noted monuments and City Hall architectural features). Mrs. Clinton’s announcement was a proud moment for the entire city and we welcomed her warmly. In addition, Mrs. Clinton visited the Westminster Community School, a shining example of a public/private partnership that has catapulted the school’s students to the top of the city’s academic rankings. “Regrettably, a local morning radio talk show host chose an opportunity to interview the First Lady by asking her inappropriate questions that had nothing to do with her role as First Lady or her potential candidacy for the United States Senate. “Not only do I condemn the type of questions posed to Mrs. Clinton, I am certain all fair-minded citizens of our community – despite their personal opinion of Mrs. Clinton – agree that there is no basis for demonstrating the type of disrespect that was directed yesterday morning to the First Lady.”
