BUFFALO (9/8/99) - Mayor Anthony M. Masiello today broke ground for a modern shelter house on South Buffalo's O'Kell Field. Councilmember Dennis Manley, representatives of the South Buffalo Baseball and Football Little Leagues and the project's architects and general contractors joined the Mayor.
"The new O'Kell Field shelter house will provide spacious, modern facilities for the area's amateur athletic programs, as well as needed meeting space for local block clubs and other community organizations," stated the Mayor. "The new building is an appropriate and practical structure that will long serve the South Buffalo community."
The city's Department of Public Works and the South Buffalo Community Association collaborated on the new facility, which will feature a general meeting room, equipment storage rooms, a concession area and restrooms.
"This project benefits our youth organizations and also improves O'Kell Field," stated Councilmember Manley. "This area has been in need of a new shelter house for many years. The residents of South Buffalo deserve a new facility."
Designed by Foit-Albert Associates, the new facility will be constructed New Era Construction Inc. It is expected to be completed by spring 2000, at which time the existing shelter house will be demolished.
