BUFFALO (9/1/99)- Mayor Anthony M. Masiello today unveiled a coordinated, citywide program to combat illegal dumping of garbage and other refuse throughout the City of Buffalo. The Mayor announced that Westwood Squibb Pharmaceutical Inc. will participate in a pilot program, designed to forge a public-private effort to fight illegal dumping in areas of the city that have attracted high rates of this criminal activity. Westwood Squibb will help in identifying those dumping illegally by focusing their external security cameras on areas adjacent to their Forest Avenue plant. The activity is associated with the Mayor's Clean and Green Campaign, which includes several environmental-related programs throughout the city.
"Westwood Squibb will be part of a growing public/private network in our community that will work toward taking action against those dumping garbage illegally; we are appreciative of Westwood Squibb's commitment to this worthy initiative," said Mayor Masiello. "This program creates a real sense of community pride, wherein private citizens can join city agencies and private enterprises in curtailing this selfish and irresponsible behavior. We need the help of both corporate and private citizens to help in our fight against illegal dumping."
The Mayor noted that this effort will be coordinated by an Illegal Dumping Task Force, which will include the city's Police Department, Streets and Sanitation, the Mayor's Impact Team, Weed and Seed, Administrative Adjudication and the Fire Department. The Task Force will identify problem areas throughout the city and initiate a joint effort in the apprehension and prosecution of illegal dumpers. Violators are subject to a fine of up to $1,500.00 and seizure of any vehicles involved in illegal dumping.
Mayor Masiello also reminds citizens to call 911 if they witness people dumping in Buffalo. Tips leading to a conviction may be eligible for an award up to $500.
