MAYOR MASIELLO REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ALLEYWAY THEATRE
BUFFALO (10/24/00) -- Following two and a half months of negotiations, the City of Buffalo and Alleyway Theatre have announced that all issues have been resolved regarding the continuation of Alleyway Theatre in Buffalo's Downtown Theatre District.
Both parties have agreed that the previously negotiated 25 year lease between Alleyway Incorporated and the City of Buffalo will continue in full force, guaranteeing the theatre company exclusive use of the building, which was formerly the Greyhound Bus Depot. Alleyway Theatre will continue with its plans for the complete renovation of the property which, until recently, was also home to a Buffalo Police Precinct. The planned expansion of the theatre will proceed, and the City will retain ownership of the property as well as reserve the right to approve any improvements or subleasing arrangements.
The breakthrough comes following direct conversations between representatives of Alleyway Theatre and Mayor Anthony M. Masiello.
Mayor Masiello stated, "The Alleyway has been a vital force in the preservation of the Theatre District's identity as a unique place in downtown Buffalo. Their contribution of new works to the theatre bill of fare, offers the public an option most other cities can't afford. This expansion will help to make their mission more enjoyable and more accessible to theatre patrons. With the resolution of this issue and other exciting Theatre District opportunities, I am confident new audiences will come down to enjoy all the Theatre District has to offer."
Alleyway Theatre Executive Director Neal Radice commented, "Our recent meeting with Mayor Masiello proved extremely helpful in clearing up misunderstandings on both sides. The Mayor was very generous with his time and I am certain that this situation has been brought to such a happy end due to his direct influence. I look forward to working with the city, as we have so well in the past, as we continue to forge that special place for the performing arts we call 'Alleyway Theatre'."
The City will soon complete vacating the area formerly occupied by the Police Department and move to make some modest repairs to the structure. Following this activity, the Alleyway Theatre will receive the keys to the areas of the building that will house its future box office, lobby, administrative offices, community meeting room, costume shop and potential retail space. An ambitious fundraising campaign for the theatre will be announced shortly.
