(Buffalo, NY 4-7-00) The Buffalo Arts Commission is pleased to announce the creation of rules and regulations for the "Art in Public Places" ordinance signed by Mayor Anthony M. Masiello last fall.

The legislation was drafted during 1998 by the Buffalo Arts Commission and then Councilmember-at-large Hon. Barbra Kavanaugh's office. The new ordinance is now in effect as follows:

An amount equal to One Percent (1%) of the total budgeted construction and design cost of any capital improvement project:

1) paid for wholly or in part by the City of Buffalo, and

2) equal to or greater than one million dollars ($1,000,000),

shall be included in the budget for the planning, design, construction, repair and maintenance of public works of art.

Mayor Masiello expressed his support for the new program: "The 'Art in Public Places' ordinance gives our city a tool to ensure that new works of art will always accompany our major development projects. This progressive legislation will bring the role of public art to its proper place in 21st century Buffalo."
