BUFFALO (4/23/99) - Mayor Anthony M. Masiello today presided at the demolition of the former Ram Bar, which had been a neighborhood nuisance for many years. The abandoned structure will be demolished to make way for potential reuse, including new private dwellings. The local neighborhood has been consulted by the city for desirable reuse possibilities.

"Today is the start of a new day for rebuilding this proud West Side neighborhood," stated Mayor Masiello. "The city will concentrate building inspections throughout this neighborhood and all derelict structures will be included in our comprehensive demolition/rehabilitation agenda."

The Mayor announced that a vacant building at 313 Rhode Island (located directly across the street from the Ram Bar) will be bid for demolition today.

Joined by Councilman Robert Quintana and Monsignor Ronald Lord of Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church, the Mayor noted that today's activity and subsequent actions are consistent with the agenda articulated recently by Monsignor Lord and other clergy members of VOICE-Buffalo.

"Our commitment is to continue to reduce crime, expand the tote garbage can program and to work with organizations like VOICE-Buffalo in demolishing or rehabilitating structures across the city," noted the Mayor. "A coordinated, comprehensive approach to rebuilding our city's neighborhoods will further enhance quality of life issue for our citizens."

Mayor Masiello emphasized the importance of the West Side activities, which will help with accompanying Peace Bridge Gateway development projects.
